GRASSLAND - the benefits of re-seeding
Why re-seed?
- Grassland yield and quality deteriorates with age.
- Weed grasses are low yielding and unpalatable
- Perennial Ryegrass is up to 7 units of digestibility (1.1ME) better than weed grasses.
- New plants are more disease resistant and winter hardy.
- The first year ley yields 33% more than subsequent years.
- High yields can reduce silage-making costs by up to £20 per tonne of DM.
- Sustained growth of palatable species prolongs autumn grazing.
- Earlier turn out from younger, more vigorous plants -each extra day is worth £0.56 per cow, 100 cows gaining in one week equates to a £392 saving.
DETERIORATION OF GRASSLAND WITH AGE

This graph shows that over a period of years the percentage of sown species reduces year by year. In the first three years the reduction is gradual but from year four it declines more rapidly. After four years more than 40% of the sward is made up of weed grasses.
G.S.D MIXTURE QUALITY
- All species are mixed in the right proportion to improve sward performance
- Varieties chosen with yield, digestibility, persistence and disease resistance in mind
- Mixtures have high seed rates to ensure excellent establishment, performance, sward density and weed suppression.
G.S.D. SEED QUALITY
- A combination of efficient processing and strict adherence to quality standards, ensures your farm will benefit from GSD grass mixtures.
- All seed is tested and certified to high standards to guarantee germination, vigour and purity.

D = diploid- smaller seeds, higher dry matter, spreading growth habit.
T = tetraploid – large seeds, slightly lower dry matter, more palatable, upright growth habit – ideal for conservation.
MAXI SWEET MIXTURES
Recent studies have shown that some grass varieties produce higher yields of sugar than others. Higher sugar levels lead to increased palatability and more efficient conversion of digested grass to meat or milk.
Higher levels of sugar in the grass aids rapid fermentation into silage thereby enhancing the quality, palatability and digestibility to livestock.
Selected High Sugar varieties in the MAXI – SWEET range include:-
Calibra
An intermediate tetraploid for best all round performance of dry matter yield, sugar yield and sward density. Good early spring growth, ideal for silage and grazing.
Foxtrot
A late diploid producing exceptionally high sugar yields throughout the peak summer grazing period. High yielder for conservation and grazing. Good resistance to crown rust.
Millennium
A late tetraploid variety exhibiting very high dry matter yields throughout the summer and into autumn, high leaf content and dense growth results in better than average ground cover.
We are able to provide specialist mixtures offering the highest sugar yields and exceptionally high dry matter yields evenly distributed throughout the growing season, with uniform sward height and density for maximum recovery and minimum waste by grazing animals.
See GSD Mixtures No3, No4, No5 and No6.
These specially selected mixtures actually do produce more sugar in the crop. This has the beneficial effect of:-- a. Increasing palatability and grazing intake leading to higher milk yields or live weight gain.
- b. Assisting improved fermentation of silage crops in order to preserve the crop with minimal wastage and increase intake and animal performance. Research trials over many years have now established that comparing high sugar varieties with conventional mixtures reveal the following benefits in livestock performance.
Dairy Cows - up to 2Kg more DM intake/day and produce up to 6% more milk through the grazing season. Digestibility of High Sugar varieties is 3% higher and utilisation of nitrogen/protein is up to 24% improved. This aids reduction of urea in blood and milk.
Beef Cattle demonstrate increased DMI of around 25% resulting in around 20% increase in LWG.
Lamb Production shows greater forage intakes resulting in LWG improvement of around 20%
